Aluminum and Ornamental Fences in Romeoville, IL

Romeoville’s residential table says “wrought iron,” and the definition is wider than the metal. It includes an open fence of wrought iron, other metal, PVC, or anodized aluminum with similar looks. That is the class to read before you order an ornamental aluminum fence.

Where this fence type is allowed

Hedge, picket, split rail, and wrought iron are permitted in the front yard, the reverse corner yard, the back-to-back corner yard, and the rear yard of an interior lot. An ornamental aluminum fence that fits the wrought-iron definition uses that permission. It does not get a special height. The front and reverse corner maximum is 3 feet. The back-to-back corner and the interior rear yard are 6 feet.

The permit guide prints the type table, the setbacks, and the sight-triangle note. A 6-foot ornamental fence is not a front-yard fence. If the product is a solid privacy panel in aluminum, read it as privacy, not as wrought iron. Privacy is not permitted in the front yard or the reverse corner yard.

Chain link is a different row, even when it is black. Chain link is limited to rear yards of interior lots, must be 11-gauge or heavier, and cannot use slats. Do not describe a chain-link fence as ornamental aluminum to move it into a front yard.

Pools and open metal fences

A yard fence at least 4 feet high can be the enclosure §157.027(F)(5) describes, if the yard is completely enclosed. A protective fence with a locking ladder is the other option in that sentence. The pool page quotes the pool definition: 24 inches or more over more than 25 square feet, or more than 200 gallons.

The village deleted the ISPSC mesh-fence barrier section. This page does not offer mesh as a substitute for an aluminum fence. It also does not quote gate and latch sizes that were not in the sections used here. Ask the village which barrier details apply to the pool permit.

Cross-check vinyl if you want an open PVC fence in the same visual class, and wood if you want picket instead of metal. All of them still go through the permit.

The estimate should name the height in each yard, the color, the open ornamental style, the gates, and whether the fence is also the pool enclosure. It should include the drawing items the ordinance lists: location, structures, property lines, easements, and street lines.
