Pool Fences in Romeoville, IL
A pool fence in Romeoville has two layers of rules: the swimming-pool section in §157.027(F)(5), and the fence section in §157.042. The pool section says when an enclosure is required. The fence section says which fence types and heights can stand in which yards.
Which pools the ordinance covers
Section 157.027(F)(5) says a swimming pool is an outdoor basin capable of containing water to a depth of 24 inches or more and covering more than 25 square feet, or containing more than 200 gallons. That definition is what decides the enclosure sentence. It is not limited, in the text re-opened here, to in-ground pools.
No such pool is allowed unless it has a protective fence with a locking ladder, or the yard is completely enclosed by a fence not less than 4 feet high. An above-ground pool that meets the definition is in that sentence. A locking ladder on a protective fence is one path. A full-yard fence of at least 4 feet is the other.
The same subsection says the pool is not to be less than 10 feet from overhead utility lines or 5 feet from buried electric or communications lines, and that discharge must not create a public nuisance. This page does not add a permit fee.
Mesh barriers and gates
Section 150.12 adopts the 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code and deletes Section 305.2.4, “Mesh Fence as a Barrier,” in its entirety. A removable mesh pool fence is not treated as an allowed barrier on this site.
Gate and latch dimensions in the adopted code are not quoted. Those subsections were not the source of these pages, and a number that was not read is not printed. Ask Romeoville Community Development which gate and latch rules apply to your pool, and read the adopted code for the barrier sections that remain.
The aluminum page is the ornamental-metal companion. The wrought-iron class, which includes anodized aluminum with similar looks, is permitted in every residential yard column, at that yard’s height. A 4-foot yard fence can satisfy the pool section only if the yard is completely enclosed and the fence rules for that yard allow that height and type. A front yard is limited to 3 feet, so a front-yard panel is not the 4-foot enclosure by itself.
The fence permit still applies
The enclosure is a fence. Section 157.042 still requires a permit to install, replace, alter, or move it. The permit guide has the drawing, the drainage certificate, the heights, and the setbacks. A pool fence in a drainage easement is still a fence the village may remove or alter, and the village is not responsible for replacing it.
The village charges a permit fee set by its fee schedule. Confirm the current amount with Romeoville Community Development before you apply. That sentence is the only fee language on this page. The village building-permits page is where you confirm the current amount. This site does not print a pool fee or a fence fee.
The cost guide has sourced fence figures. It does not have a separate Romeoville pool-fence average. Prices vary. A free estimate gives the real number. Use the contact form and say whether the pool is above-ground or in-ground and whether the yard is already fenced.

FAQ
Does an above-ground pool need a fence?
If it meets the definition in §157.027(F)(5), yes. That definition is an outdoor basin that can hold 24 inches or more of water over more than 25 square feet, or more than 200 gallons. It then needs a protective fence with a locking ladder, or the yard must be completely enclosed by a fence at least 4 feet high.
Is a removable mesh pool fence allowed?
This site does not treat it as allowed. Romeoville adopted the 2021 ISPSC in §150.12 and deleted Section 305.2.4, Mesh Fence as a Barrier, in its entirety. Ask the village before you rely on a mesh product.
Does my 4-foot yard fence count?
It can, if the yard is completely enclosed by a fence not less than 4 feet high. The fence also has to be a type and height the fence ordinance allows in each yard it crosses. A front yard is limited to 3 feet, so the enclosure has to be planned yard by yard. The permit guide is the height table.
Do I need a pool permit?
Ask Romeoville Community Development. A fence that encloses the pool still needs a fence permit to install, replace, alter, or move. The village charges a permit fee set by its fee schedule. Confirm the current amount before you apply. This page does not print the amount.
