Where Privacy Fences Are Allowed in Romeoville
A privacy fence in Romeoville is a row on the residential type table, not a material. Vinyl privacy and wood privacy use the same yards. This page is that row, written out. The fee is not printed here.
Where the privacy row is permitted
Section 157.042 does not permit a privacy fence in a front yard or in a reverse corner yard. It permits privacy in a back-to-back corner yard and in the rear yard of an interior lot. The code marks those permitted cells. This page does not add a meaning for that mark. Walls and shadow-box fences use the same front-yard limit.
Height follows the yard. The front yard and the reverse corner yard are 3 feet, and privacy is not a permitted type there anyway. A back-to-back corner yard and the rear yard of an interior lot are 6 feet. Calling the street side of a corner lot “the backyard” does not make it a 6-foot privacy yard if it is a reverse corner yard.
The permit guide has the full type table, the setbacks, and the sight-triangle note. A privacy panel is still a privacy fence if it is vinyl or wood. An open aluminum fence is usually the wrought-iron row, which is a different permission. Chain link with slats is not a workaround. Slats are prohibited.
Boards, drainage, and the neighbors
Structural members face in, not toward a public street or a neighboring property. Boards sit at least 2 inches above grade, and a 4-inch sphere cannot pass underneath. That pair is §157.042(E). No fence may inhibit drainage. The village may remove, relocate, or alter a fence in an easement and is not responsible for replacing it.
Setbacks on the residential table are 1 foot in the front, reverse corner, and back-to-back corner, and none stated for the rear. A fence in the front yard may not run parallel to the front lot line. A privacy fence that is not allowed in the front yard does not get to ignore that rule by being called a side fence.
CMAP’s June 2026 snapshot lists 68.6 percent single-family detached homes and 16.5 percent attached homes in Romeoville. A privacy run between detached houses is the common request. An attached home can still have an association. The HOA page is the village matching rule for a development fence. This site does not state any association’s design rule.
Replacing a privacy fence that is too tall or in the wrong yard
Section 157.042(R) says replacing a nonconforming fence must bring it into compliance. A 6-foot privacy fence in a front yard is not the model for the new fence. The repair page is the repair-versus-replacement split. A permit is required to install, replace, alter, or move a fence.
The village charges a permit fee set by its fee schedule. Confirm the current amount with Romeoville Community Development before you apply. The village building-permits page is the link. The cost guide keeps Fixr’s installed ranges, updated January 31, 2025, and Angi’s figures, updated August 3, 2026, in separate rows. Prices vary. A free estimate gives the real number. A 6-foot privacy run is not Fixr’s example of 200 linear feet of 4-foot cedar picket. Use the contact form.

FAQ
Can I put a 6-foot privacy fence in the front yard?
No. Privacy fences are not permitted in a front yard or a reverse corner yard. They are permitted in a back-to-back corner yard and in the rear yard of an interior lot. The front-yard height maximum is 3 feet, and privacy is not one of the types allowed there.
Does vinyl privacy follow a different rule than wood?
No. The table classifies the fence by type. A vinyl privacy panel and a wood privacy panel are both privacy fences. The material pages describe the products. This page is the yard rule.
Can I add slats to chain link instead?
No. Section 157.042(P) prohibits slats. Chain link is its own row, limited to rear yards of interior lots, and slats do not move it onto the privacy row.
Does a replacement have to come down to today’s height?
Yes, when the work is a replacement. Section 157.042(R) requires a replacement of a nonconforming fence to meet the current ordinance. The old height is not the standard for the new fence.
