Chain Link Fences in Romeoville, IL

Chain link in Romeoville is allowed in a narrower place than picket or wrought iron. The residential table permits it in the rear yard of an interior lot and does not permit it in the front yard, a reverse corner yard, or a back-to-back corner yard.

Where this fence type is allowed

Read the row before you buy the mesh. Front: not permitted. Reverse corner: not permitted. Back-to-back corner: not permitted. Rear yard of an interior lot: permitted. The notes on the ordinance say chain link must be 11-gauge or heavier. The permit guide repeats the type table so this page and that page stay the same.

Section 157.042(P) prohibits slats. A chain-link fence with privacy slats is not a workaround for the privacy row. Mesh screening is also prohibited, with an exception the ordinance limits to approved sites under development or redevelopment. This page does not expand that exception.

In the P-B district, chain link is allowed only when it is fully covered with a black vinyl coating, alongside wrought-iron appearance and full vinyl. That district rule is not the residential rear-yard rule. Aluminum is the open-metal comparison. It is not chain link.

Corner lots, dogs, and height

A corner lot is not an interior lot. The table does not permit chain link in the front, reverse corner, or back-to-back corner columns. Do not place chain link on those yards because a dog lives there. A dog run in the rear yard of an interior lot can be chain link if the rest of the rules are met: 11-gauge or heavier, no slats, the rear-yard height of 6 feet, and the rear setback, which the residential setback table lists as none.

The rear-yard height on an interior lot is 6 feet. That does not raise the front-yard maximum, and it does not move chain link into a corner yard. Setbacks, drainage, and the sight triangle still apply. The sight-triangle dimensions themselves are in §157.021, which is not quoted here. The fence section says no significant obstruction between 3 feet and 10 feet in that triangle.

If the style you actually want is privacy, use the privacy rules on the wood or vinyl page. Slats do not turn chain link into an allowed privacy fence.

Cost and the permit

Fixr, updated January 31, 2025, uses 200 linear feet of 3-foot galvanized chain link as a low example, and it prints an installed chain-link range per linear foot. Angi, updated August 3, 2026, prints a material chain-link range and a different project average. The cost guide lists those figures with sources. This page does not blend them. Prices vary. A free estimate gives the real number.

The village charges a permit fee set by its fee schedule. Confirm the current amount with Romeoville Community Development before you apply. The application still needs the survey or scaled drawing, the fence description, and the signed drainage certificate. Link: the permit guide and the village permits page.

Send the contact form with the village, the words “interior rear yard” or “corner lot,” and the approximate length. A corner-lot chain-link request needs a direct answer, not a guess.

FAQ

Can I add privacy slats to a chain link fence?

No. Section 157.042(P) prohibits slats. Privacy slats do not make chain link a permitted privacy fence, and they do not make chain link allowed in a yard where the chain-link row says not permitted.

Can chain link go on a corner lot?

Not in the front yard, the reverse corner yard, or the back-to-back corner yard. The residential table permits chain link in the rear yard of an interior lot. A corner lot uses the corner columns. Confirm which yards you have on the plat before you plan the mesh.

Can I use chain link for a dog run?

In the rear yard of an interior lot, chain link is a permitted type if it is 11-gauge or heavier, has no slats, and meets the height and the other fence rules. A dog does not create an exception for a front yard or a corner yard. The ordinance does not print a separate dog-run section in the text used here.

How much does chain link cost?

Use the cost guide. Fixr’s low example and its installed chain-link range are from the page updated January 31, 2025. Angi’s chain-link material range is from the page updated August 3, 2026. They are quoted separately. Prices vary. A free estimate gives the real number.
